I'm Stephen Metcalfe, the Conservative MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock and it's an honour to represent you with a majority of over 11,000. Here you can find my latest news, campaigns and more about me, including how to contact my office. I'm here to help, regardless of how you voted, so please don't hesitate to get in touch.
I am passionate about supporting science and technology. I participate in many groups in Parliament to help build on our modern industrial success story and help rocket Britain onto the global stage as a leading innovative force in fields like artificial intelligence (AI).
I help to keep our country safe, protect our values and preserve our way of life. I work with the Police, Councillors & businesses to tackle crime head on and support local initiatives. I helped secure additional Police funding of up to £8.8 million for 2018/19 resulting in 150 new officers for Essex Police. I am also pushing for tougher legislation on illegal traveller encampments.
For me, quality education is a vital driver of social mobility and the key to building a more prosperous Britain. That is why visiting and supporting our schools is the most common activity I undertake when back in the constituency. This year I am most focused on inspiring a new diverse generation of future engineers as the Government’s Envoy for the Year of Engineering initiative.
The British people voted to leave the EU. Turnout was larger than at any election since 1992 and no Prime Minister or party in British history has ever received as many votes as the vote to leave did. The Government has a duty to deliver the referendum result and it will do so in the national interest. I see this not just as my duty as a democrat, but a restoration of national pride and self-determination.
2018 is the Year of Engineering - a government-industry initiative to challenge the stereotypes and raise the profile of engineering among young people, their parents and teachers to inspire a future generation. Brexit provides us with an opportunity to build on our modern industrial success story and rocket onto the global stage as a leading innovative force.
Smart Parking UK are operating the Westgate Carpark in Basildon. The charging and fining system in operation has led to thousands of fines being issued despite people trying to do the right thing and pay the appropriate fee to park. I will monitor the situation closely and call on Smart Parking UK to end their unfair practices which risk giving Westgate shopping centre a bad reputation.
