Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock, has welcomed the launch of the Government’s Swimming Pool Support Fund. Thanks to the new fund, Impulse Leisure in Corringham is set to receive an investment of over £83k.
Over recent months, the operating costs of swimming pools and leisure facilities have increased considerably, increasing risks of closure or service reduction. To combat this, the Conservative Government is investing £20 million in swimming pools and leisure centres across England.
Swimming is, of course, an invaluable life skill and extremely beneficial for mental and physical health. As well as teaching children how to swim, swimming pools are a vital resource for competitive swimming clubs, water polo clubs, and aqua aerobics.
Overall, 196 leisure centres and swimming pools in 103 local authorities will benefit from the £20 million funding, supporting over 23 million swims a year.
The Swimming Pool Support Fund was first announced at the March Budget. This first £20 million of funding is going to the swimming pools and leisure centres most at risk of closure or service reduction. In particular, it will help with the recent rise in energy costs, paying towards immediate maintenance costs, heating, and pool chemicals.
Stephen Metcalfe said:
“I know that our local pools are essential for young swimmers who are just starting out, as well as adults who are keeping up their fitness. They are community hubs.
I also understand that swimming pools have struggled over recent months as operating costs have increased.
Therefore, I absolutely welcome the Government’s investment of over £83k for Impulse Leisure in Corringham, and the further £20 million for swimming pools across England.”
Sports Minister, Stuart Andrew MP, said:
“Leisure centres and pools are vital for millions of people to stay fit and healthy, and we know that many public swimming pools are experiencing greater pressure due to increased operating costs.
We have heard their concerns and have stepped in to help them make ends meet with £20 million immediate relief, and a further £40 million to help improve sustainability of public swimming pools over the long term.
This is part of our support for grassroots sports facilities with more than £400 million in order to achieve our ambitious target of getting 3.5 million more people active by 2030.”
